Abstract:
The current study was conducted to assess the water quality of Shahdara and Korang water streams, Islamabad. Five composite samples were collected along both streams and one sample was taken each from Rawal demand the Rawal dam treatment plant to check whether the adequate treatment is provided before supplying to people in January ,2019. The Physiochemical parameters (EC, TDS, Sulfates, Nitrates, Phosphate, Chloride, Hardness, TSS, TS, turbidity, color, COD, BOD, DO and pH) were analyzed along with heavy metals (lead, manganese and cadmium) concentration. Physical parameters such as pH, EC,TDS were analyzed on site using portable instruments. Other parameters were analyzed in the EPA laboratory using standard methods. The results were compared with the WHO and NEQs standards. From the results it was found that pH, TDS, chloride and sulfate of our samples were within permissible limits. Turbidity of samples collected from Bari imam, Korang and Bani Gala was above permissible limit and color of sample taken from Korang and Bani Gala was above the permissible limits. TS of sample collected from Bari Imam, Korang, Bani Gala and Rawal dam was above permissible limits while TSS of sample taken from Korang and Bani Gala was above permissible limits. Hardness and nitrate in sample collected from Bani Gala was above permissible limits. Phosphate of sample taken from QAU, Bari Imam, Korang, Bani Gala and Rawal Dam was above permissible limits. Lead in sample collected from Bani Gala and Rawal dam andMn in all samples except sample collected from Bani Gala and cadmium in sample taken from QAU, Korang and Bani Gala was above permissible limit. BOD in sample collected from QAU, Bari Imam, Korang, Bani Gala and Rawal dam and COD in all the research samples was above permissible limits. Therefore, it is recommended to the concerned authorities to check and monitor the human activities at different streams which are contributing to pollution in Rawal dam
