Role of social media to aware urban-lower class women about sexual harassment

Abstract

One of the major problems Pakistan facing now-a-days is sexual abuse whether it is in form of marital abuse, domestic abuse, rape or sexual harassment. Sexual harassment and rape ratio in Pakistan increasing day-by-day which affect economy of country, health of victim and families. Government of Pakistan took serious steps toward rape and harassment issues but still they are just piece of paper with no proper implementation. This study, thus, aims to identify the role of social media in the awareness of urban-lower women about sexual harassment. The study is based on a theoretical framework built on Social Ecological Model to understand the role of social media to combat with sexual harassment. Purpose random sampling has been used in the research conducted in Bahria University. The research method that has been used for the conduction of data is qualitative research. The result of the research shows that 90% of women agree that harassment occur at workplace, but they are unaware of their action and reporting process. There are several factors that restrict women from taking actions like social, economical, cultural and psychological factor, urban lower class women are considered vulnerable group of society which have no say in society, face harassment in large number but never report because of factor mentioned in research paper. In the world of technology and development, these women are restricted or can’t afford expensive phone which also make them vulnerable. Government, digital media and organization/institutions take some serious steps to combat with sexual harassment
