The principal objective of the present research was to find out the bearing capacity of Plot 96, Civic Block, Gulberg Greens, Islamabad. Three boreholes had been drilled at various locations with boreholes depth ranging up to 60 feet. Borehole drilling was done by using percussion boring rig, and number of disturbed and undisturbed samples had been acquired. Field testing included Standard Penetration test (SPT), field density test and moisture content tests performed in accordance to ASTM standards. The test performed in the laboratory comprised of Sieve analysis, Atterberg limits, Standard penetration test, and chemical test on soil and ground water samples. Sieve analysis test showed that from the existing surface level (ESL) up to the maximum investigated depth of 60 ft, the subsurface was composed of silty sandy clay in loose to medium dense state followed by silty sand of medium dense to very dense state. Bearing capacity of soil was calculated through SPT test as 0.89 Tsf for raft footing to be placed 10-13 ft below the existing road level by using any of the Meyerhof’s, Terzaghi, and Hansen equations |
