Abstract:
The current study was conducted to evaluate the occupational health issues at M.I.Z Re Rolling Steel Mill, Islamabad. The primary objective of the study was to assess occupational health issues of night shift workers. Probable health issues between day and night shift workers were evaluated using Standard Shift-work Index Manual. For the purpose of assessing the occupational health issues of shift workers certain health parameters were done which includes BMI, Lipid Profile test, Blood Pressure and Heart Rate. The results obtained from the study includes, that 44% of the day shift workers were suffering from obesity whereas 60% of the workers working in night shift were overweight. From the lipid profile test results, none of the workers working in day shift had any risk of high cholesterol levels whereas, 80% workers in night shift had high cholesterol levels. From the SSI, 68% of the day shift workers had no sleep disturbances, whereas, 88% of the night shift workers had difficulty in sleeping. 16% of the day shift workers feel tired on their shift and 56% of the night shift workers feel tired on their respective shift. 72% of the workers working in M.I.Z Re Rolling Steel Mill have appetite disturbances with 44% workers suffering from diarrhea and constipation frequently. The health parameters and SSI revealed disturbed circadian rhythm among night shift workers, which leads to fatigue and anxiety. The night shift workers are prone to adverse occupational health risks as compared to day shift workers at M.I.Z Re Rolling Steel Mill
