dc.description.abstract While driving along Highway, we all encounter single or multiple booths in which we have to pay a fixed amount of money to the Highway authority, this mechanism is toll collection. Manual Toll Collection is the most widely used method in Pakistan. In this, when the vehicle arrives at the toll booth the driver gives the money to the collector at the booth who feeds the information in the computer and provides a receipt to driver, due to this we have to wait for long time and this lead also to wastage of fuel. The Automated Toll Collection System is a new technology for collecting toll in a faster and more efficient way, have great impact over manual toll collection such as time saving, reduce wastage of fuel etc. In order to overcome the wastage of time and fuel at same time we have come up with a concept of RFID Based Automated Toll Collection system. RFID stands for Radio Frequency Identification. The RFID tags are unique identities provided to every vehicle by administration. Whenever a vehicle with such unique ID reaches the toll plaza, first the IR sensor detects the vehicle and activates the camera to capture the image of the number plate and will match with database. RFID reader attached on the toll plaza gate reads the tag and transfers the unique ID to the database using Arduino ATmega2560 and matches with the number plate. If matched accordingly, the processor works and deducts fixed amount from the tag. If the tag’s ID has sufficient balance, the processor will command the DC motor to start and open the gate, letting the vehicle to pass. On passing from the gate, the screen will show current balance of the tag. If the tag ID and number plate are not matched with each other then it will show error message on LCD. Furthermore, an Android App is developed for users to check their toll history and balance. The proposed system has many benefits over other toll collection like time saving and much helpful in security issues. en_US
