Relationship Between Children,s and Parent,s Emotional intelligence and Parenting Styles.

Abstract

The aim of the present research was to examine the relationship between children’s and parent’s emotional intelligence and parenting styles. It was hypothesized there would be a significant relationship between parent’s emotional intelligence and children’s emotional intelligence and there would be a significant difference in the relationship of different parenting styles with children’s emotional intelligence. A sample of 188 families (564 participants) was taken comprising 188 children, ages ranging from 18 to 24, (109 females, 79 males) and their parents, by using purposive and snowball sampling technique from different residential areas of Karachi. Lahore, Multan and Islamabad. Schutte Self-report Emotional Intelligence Test (SSEIT) and Perceived Parental Authority Questionnaire-Pertaining to Mother and Father (PPAQ) were used for assessing general emotional intelligence and parenting styles respectively. Pearson Coefficient of Correlation and Linear Regression analysis were used as a statistical tolls. The results revealed a significant positive con-elation between children’s emotional intelligence with parent's emotional intelligence (r=.720 with mothers. r=.690 with fathers, p<0.05). A significant difference was found in the relationship between children’s emotional intelligence and different parenting styles i.e. with permissive parenting style (r=.522 with mothers, i—.633 with fathers, p<0.05), authoritative (r- .466 with mothers, r=.601 with fathers, p<0.05) and a significant negative relationship was found with authoritarian parenting style (r= -.236 with mothers, r= -.396 with fathers, p<0.05
