Abstract:
The Murree Formation is a part of the Miocene molasse sequence of Upper Indus Basin and consists of a series of alternating beds of sandstone, siltstone and shale with subordinate marls and conglomerates. It is well exposed in Shah Alla Ditta area, Islamabad. The main purpose of this research was to carry out the geotechnical investigation of Murree Sandstone. Six bulk samples were collected from different locations for detailed analysis. Extensive thin section study was carried out for determining the various mineralogical properties followed by mechanical tests such as Uniaxial Compressive Strength (UCS), Ultimate Tensile Strength (UTS), specific gravity, porosity and water absorption test to assess mechanical characteristics of Murree Sandstone. The mineralogical and mechanical properties were then correlated for the determination of strength properties. The results obtained from the physical, mechanical, mineralogical and other essential properties of Murree Sandstone shows that the Murree Sandstone is strong and can be used for construction purposes.
