| dc.description.abstract | Database archiving is a subset of the larger topic of data archiving. Database archiving is the process of removing selected data records from operational databases that are not expected to be referenced frequently and storing them in an archive data store where they can be retrieved if needed. Database archiving is an electronic form of records retention for the long-term. There are already some tools available for archiving databases which include Repository of Authentic Digital Records (RODA), Chronos and Software Independent Archiving of Relational Database (SIARD). Typically, the tools migrate databases to eXtensible Markup Language (XML) format and add technical as well as non-technical metadata. The Swiss Federal Archives (SFA) has established a two-fold solution. They developed the SIARD format, an open, published, consistent archiving format for relational databases. They provide a software for converting databases into the SIARD format. The SIARD tool migrate a database to an XML format and then load back to a DBMS whenever the need for searching something in the database arises. There may be many users who are not familiar with the use of DBMS, which require technical knowledge. Moreover, keeping a DBMS running for a retired database may require resources which may be saved. A tool namely Archived Database Disseminator (ADD) which provide easy access to archived data is developed. The use of this tool will help users avoid the need to installing and maintaining a Database Management System (DBMS). A desktop application is developed which is able to facilitate the dissemination of an archived database in the SIARD format. Specifically, the tool allows to join different database tables using join algorithm and filter tables using keyword-based search. ADD help users to access data in databases. ADD display names of all tables in list where user able to select the different tables easily. When user selects a specific table then it open in new window so the user easily see all records are in it. Different kinds of filter boxes are there to filter the records. Check boxes to select specific record form different tables and a tool tip to help a user in which user is working. This application is be developed for both technical and non-technical users of databases. | en_US |
