Abstract:
With unassailable growth in human population, and growing restraints on the rapidly dwindling water supplies of Pakistan, unlimited withdrawals will no longer be possible. In order to conserve water resources, a wise consumption pattern needs to be adopted. Reuse of the treated wastewater provides an unconditional source of water year round. However, its acceptability by the public is one major issue to be overcome before any measure could be taken. In this regard, the public attitude survey carried out in the five sectors of Islamabad, which were selected on the basis of income level (low, average and high) was studied. A closed- ended questionnaire was designed to assess the public attitude towards reuse of wastewater and data was analyzed using SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Science) and GIS (Geographic Information System) software.
Results of the study show that majority of the public believe in the water resource conservation, and to the usage of TWW (treated wastewater). Amongst the general public, rich people of the area accepted the reuse of TWW, whereas, the relatively poor people expressed their reservations. The results of the study further reveal the support of the younger generation. Due to ignorance about the use of TWW, the general public showed reluctance to use this water for drinking purpose as they believe that the treated polluted water may not be as pure as the natural drinking water. However, they were of the opinion that the TWW be better used for other purposes such as irrigation and for fire fighting. To conserve water resources it is recommended to select the city of Islamabad for the use of TWW as a pilot project.
