| dc.description.abstract | This research project was carried out to evaluate the engineering properties of soil, concrete and aggregate used in the construction of road which connects New International Airport with Islamabad-Lahore Motorway (M2). Engineering properties were evaluated by different field and lab tests i.e. Sieve analysis, Sand Cone method, Atterberg limits, California Bearing Ratio, Sand Equivalent, Los Angeles Abrasion Value, Specific gravity and Concrete tests. During field investigations, different test pits were excavated as per project’s specification along the proposed road alignment. In situ compaction was determined by using Sand Cone method which ranged from 90-100 %. The Atterberg limits showed that liquid limit and plastic limit varies from 25.6 % to 27.5 % and 16.2% to 15.5% respectively. The plasticity index value of 10.5 was slightly higher than the AASHTO (American Association of State Highway and Transport Officials) standards. Group index value of 7.36 showed that the soil belongs to A-4 class of soil as per AASHTO Standards. California Bearing ratio at 5.08 mm penetration ranges from 16% to 99 %. Sand equivalent test value was 82% and Los Angeles Abrasion Value was 29.6% which is according to the AASHTO standards. Concrete test results showed the good strength and high workability of concrete. According to the AASHTO soil classification and National Highway Authority, the soil of area is not recommended for use in road base due to its high plastic limit and plasticity index. It is recommended that it should be replaced by the some other soil which comes under AASHTO Standards. | en_US |
