Abstract:
The rapid growth in population has really created a concurrent demand for telephony in developing countries like Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Kenya and Brazil etc while in developed countries the demand for high data rate is increasing surprisingly. Also the rapid growth of the Internet has created a concurrent demand for broadband Internet and computer access from businesses and homes throughout the world. Particularly in developing nations where there is inadequate telecommunications backbone infrastructure, there is a tremendous need for inexpensive, reliable, rapidly deployable broadband connectivity that can bring individuals and enterprises into the information age. It is quite conceivable that a single broadband connection could someday provide all of the needed telecommunications services, including telephone service, television, radio, fax, and Internet, for a home or business customer. WLL or fixed wireless equipment is extremely well suited for rapidly deploying a telephony and broadband connection infrastructure, and this approach is steadily becoming more popular for providing “last mile” broadband local loop access, as well as for emergency or redundant point to point or point to multipoint private network. Since 2nd generation failed to provide all these demands so naturally the next generation is thinking about such technologies that may meet this demanding criteria. Work began in earnest in the mid to late 1990s under the name Future Public Land Mobile Telephony (FPLMTS). Later, the effort was renamed to the more manageable International Mobile Telephony for the Year 2000 (IMT-2000). The impetus for this work was to increase voice capacity and to provide for wireless data and Internet services. This report arrives at a fortune time for the wireless industry in Pakistan. The amount of new technology, human resources, and capital that will be invested in third generation wireless technology is huge. This report describes the implementation of WLL using CDMA2000, which is an evolution of IS-95, its advantages that it can provide along with the core equipments that it requires for its deployment.
