dc.description.abstract Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited is the largest voice and data communication service provider in Pakistan. The monopolistic regime of PTCL has come to an end since last fifteen days. So, PTCL is at the cross roads of its career and its HRM is more critical these days then ever before. PTCL has a unique history of transformation from P&T to T&T, to PTC and finally to PTCL. PTCL is still functioning mainly on the bureaucratic and authoritative style of government departments. Human Resource is not given due care and importance at PTCL. PTCL is a change adverse organization especially in the field of Human Resource Management. It is following the Human Resource Practices designed fifty five years ago for Public Service Departments. Employees are under-paid and de-motivated. PTCL, no doubt, has the technology which is most sophisticated in the region but Human Resource is not so much sophisticated and skilled to exploit this technology in an effective way. American Telephone & Telegraph is the oldest telecommunication service provider on the face of earth. Its history starts with history of invention of telephone in 1875 by Graham Bell. But still it is the market leader in its domain. Human Resource Department of AT&T has a vital role to play in its century long success. AT&T is using the most sophisticated tools and techniques in the field of Human Resource Management. It is giving premium pays to its employees and using teams and project oriented jobs. The HR Department of AT&T is credited with managing one of the most successful downsizings through creative and innovative ways. en_US
