dc.description.abstract As continual research is being conducted in the area of computer vision, one of the most practical applications under vigorous development is in the construction of a robust real-time face recognition system. While the problem of recognizing faces under gross variations remains largely unsolved, a demonstration system as proof of concept that such systems are now becoming practical have been developed. A system capable of reliable recognition, with reduced constraints in regards to the position and orientation of the face and the illumination and background of the image, has been implemented with 96% recognition accuracy. The design of the face recognition system IS based upon "Holistic Face recognition" and has been separated into three major modules -face extraction, face normalization and face recognition. Face location and normalization are performed in real-time, and consistent accuracy in face extraction is recorded with live input. A complete software capable of adding new persons in the face database and recognizing the persons already registered with the database has been implemented. While a completely robust real-time face recognition system is still under heavy investigation and development, the implemented system serves as an extendable foundation for future research . en_US
