dc.description.abstract Pakistan like other developing countries is facing many social problems waiting to be resolved. Our country is characterized by patriarchy and its implications. Illiteracy of the teeming millions just accelerates the vicious circle of problems. In the current situation our country not only needs political stability, gender responsive governance and strong economic growth but a socially responsible media equipped with the ability to meet the challenges of our new world.The main concern of the study was to find out the major social problems of our society to assess the most effective type of mass media and its role in creating awareness regarding social problems. The sample selected for the specific study was the population of the urban areas of Islamabad. The size of the sample was restricted to 120.A questionnaire was constructed which fulfilled the objectives of the study.It can be said that “unmet needs are social problems” can be observed in our society. As all major social problems are inter related to each other and has a direct relation to economic conditions or the poverty of people, as a prominent number of the people are jobless or getting very low per month income which is not fulfilling even their basic needs like good food, education and they do not have satisfactory standards of living. We can say that if economic stability can be provided to the people majority of other social problems will be automatically reduced or resolved en_US
