Abstract:
2D seismic interpretation on the area of MEYAL reveals that the area is abundantly faulted and structurally complex owing to the compressional regime and has hydrocarbon potential. The area of Meyal lies to the north of Potwar Sub-basin, Upper Indus basin, Pakistan. Regional tectonics of the area indicates severe deformation caused by compressional forces. The study area lies on a portion of the Indian plate, which was structurally deformed during the Indo-Eurasian Collision. These forces caused the formation of numerous thrust faults in the area that resulted in displacement of strata of widely varying ages in close proximity throughout the upper Indus basin. Owing to the extreme compressional regime of the area, various thrust faults combine to create structural traps in the area. This dissertation focuses on delineating those subsurface structures, and analyzing the resulting displacement utilizing contour maps for time and depth. Moreover, the petrophysical properties and rock physics of the area are studied to determine the hydrocarbon potential. 2D seismic interpretation is carried out manually on the study area and Time & Depth contours are generated. Rock properties are studied through petrophysical analysis. In addition to that, fault seal analysis is done by using ‘Allen Diagram’ to determine the capability of the structure to act as a reservoir, and to reveal the juxtaposition of structure providing a clearer image of the subsurface. Based on the outcomes of the carried out studies, it is concluded that the area is structurally highly complex and consists of numerous thrust faults that have caused displacement of the strata. Petrophysical analyses reveal that the rock properties are suitable for the formation to act as a reservoir. Fault seal analysis discloses the fact that the structural juxtaposition is suitable for entrapment of hydrocarbons.
