Abstract:
The present study was conducted to determine the environmental awareness
of Government Secondary School level students on solid waste management as an
environmental issue. The study area includes Sectors F and G of Islamabad. For the
purpose of analysis 200 students of 10th and 9th grade including 50% males and
female students were selected to get the opinion to examine the issue. For this purpose
questionnaire based survey was employed as a tool, all having the closed ended
questions. The findings of the study revealed that majority of the students were well
aware about the solid waste. 70% of students were responded that waste is unwanted,
hazardous material and 60% of students agreed that they also know the main sources
of it. In response of disposal strategy of waste, almost 59% of students agreed with
recycling of waste because of recycling the waste can be handled properly and
effectively. All of students were strongly agreed that environmental education in
schools must be advocated. More than 80% students respondents that they were
satisfied with the efforts made by Capital Development Authority in order to timely
handle the collection of waste material in their areas. The study suggests that the
household facilities may also be investigated in order to know the domestic practices
regarding solid waste management. Door to door counseling, using interpersonal
communication skills can be provided to domestic solid waste management and this
may also contribute to overall management system efficacy.
