Abstract:
Communication with the help of hand gestures is done without means of sound and is
referred as sign-language. American Sign-Language is standard, having signs for all 26
alphabets which can be made with right hand. In this project, a glove has been developed
which is based on American Sign-Language, for vocally disable persons to communicate
with the help of hand gestures. The glove is fitted with; Flex sensors to detect finger flexes,
Contact sensors to detect contacts between two fingers, Accelerometer to detect hand motion connected with Arduino Mega 2560 and A Wireless Transmitter for the communication between the detection unit and the display unit on the arm circuit. The Arduino mega 2560 reads the values from all sensors mounted on the glove and decides the alphabet signed by the user. The alphabet is then transmitted to display unit through wireless transmitter. The display unit displays the alphabet on LCD and transmits it to the speech unit through serial port communication. The speech unit speaks the alphabet from SD card, which has predefined sound samples, through speaker connected to the Arduino Uno. The Glove is Portable and operated by rechargeable battery and wireless. It is a programmable design. At the moment it is programmed to process 15 alphabets and three phrases however it has the capability to process (by programming) all 26 alphabets.
