Abstract:
About 16.4% of total natural gas is used by residential sector Residential sector uses
about 95% of its total natural gas consumption for space heating, water heating and
for cooking. Most of the gas is used for water heating purpose especially in winters.
But problem is that a lot of gas is wasted due to poor maintenance especially due to
outdoor installation of boilers and geysers.
This project aims at to control flow of gas in gas appliances with in specific range of
set time and temperature. Time/Temperature range can be set manually using keypad
as well as through wireless communication using GSM module. LCD is used for
display purpose. In time controlled mode clock of GSM module is used while in
temperature controlled mode we use temperature sensor to monitor the water
temperature. Pressure sensor is used to ensure opening of valve only when gas
pressure is adequate enough to generate flame and flame sensor is used to ensure
presence of flame. Along with pressure, temperature and flame sensor gas sensor is
also installed to detect gas leakage to ensure user’s safety. All components are
interfaced with Microcontroller PIC 18F4520 which is programmed to save
desired settings and to control turning ON/OFF of solenoid valve, automatic spark
kit is installed which starts the spark when solenoid allows the flow of gas.
Microcontroller is programmed to work in a loop which continuously monitors time/
temperature range, gas pressure, presence of flame and gas leakage. If any error occurs
the microcontroller gives signal to buzzer which is installed for the safety purpose.
The idea makes it possible to use gas appliances for desired time/temperature range
only which can for sure save a lot of natural gas. User is facilitated by
controlling appliances by sending a simple message and user’s safety is ensured by
using gas sensor.
