Abstract:
The study area is located adjacent to Main Boundary thrust at the foot of the MargallaHills, sector D-12, Islamabad.D-12 is a newly developed sector in Islamabad and have major problems of Groundwater. Aquifers are mostly dry and contain insufficient groundwater for domestic use. Electrical resistivity survey is conducted in D-12 Sector, Islamabad for hydrogeologic exploration of groundwater at seventeen different sample locations with the help of SAS 4000 Terameter using schlumberger configuration. Well data is recorded at different points throughout the study area, average water table and the average total depth is determined. The higher dip angle of the depositional units of the Miocene formations are found at the surface. The Water Table Depth (WTD) is found to be at 15 meters below surface on average. The wells are drilled up to 44 meters on average basis. On the basis of seven types of resistivity curves i.e.Q, K, A, AH, HA, KQ and QH type, minimum of two and maximum three layers are found. The aquifer unit in most of the lithologic columns is found to be sand and the confining layer is clay. The confined and unconfined aquifers are found. On the basis of overall correlation it is furnished that the sector D-12 (1 and 2) is having a higher potential of groundwater than the sector D-12 (3 and 4) and can be demarcated as the recharge area.
