Abstract:
This ethnographic study investigates the complicated processes of cultural heritage preservation in Saidpur Village, a historic Pakistani settlement enriched by the influences of Sikhism, Hinduism, and Islam over centuries. As globalization increasingly threatens the village's cultural integrity, this research seeks to explore the multifaceted impacts on traditional practices and intangible cultural resources. The study aims to illuminate the evolving nature of Saidpur's customs and values by examining the interactions between diverse cultural groups and the effects of global influences. In this context, globalization not only poses challenges but also presents opportunities for dialogue and cultural exchange, highlighting the resilience of local traditions amidst external pressures. Employing a qualitative research methodology that includes participant observation, in-depth interviews with elders, and insights from cultural custodians, the study captures the community's perspectives, challenges, and experiences in their quest to preserve their distinct identities. This approach allows for a nuanced understanding of how traditional practices are being reshaped in response to contemporary pressures, such as urbanization and the proliferation of digital media. The study emphasizes that intangible cultural heritage such as storytelling, music, and traditional craftsmanship requires as much attention as physical structures. Furthermore, it underscores the significant role of global media in shaping the perceptions and aspirations of the younger generation, who often find themselves torn between modernity and tradition. The findings reveal the profound challenges faced by Saidpur's elder population in maintaining their cultural identity and intangible heritage. Many express concerns that the rapid changes brought on by globalization could dilute their traditions, leading to a loss of cultural continuity. The research advocates for more inclusive and culturally sensitive approaches to heritage conservation that honor the voices of local communities. By involving elders and cultural custodians in the decision-making processes, heritage preservation can become a collaborative effort that not only respects traditional knowledge but also adapts to contemporary realities. Ultimately, this study broadens the understanding of cultural preservation by highlighting the necessity of safeguarding the authenticity and diversity of traditional communities in the face of globalization, fostering a sense of pride and continuity that can be passed down to future generations.
