Abstract:
Harassment in the bank sector refers to any unwelcome or unwanted behavior that creates a hostile or intimidating work environment. This can include verbal or non-verbal conduct, such as unwelcome comments, gestures, or physical contact. Harassment can be based on various factors, including race, gender, age, religion, or sexual orientation. It can be perpetrated by colleagues, managers, or even customers, and can have serious consequences for the well-being and productivity of bank employees.(Ayesha Bhattie 2024) Several factors contribute to harassment in the bank sector, including a hierarchical structure, high stress levels, and a culture of silence. Power imbalances between employees and managers or colleagues can create an environment where harassment can thrive. Additionally, the high-pressure environment of a bank can sometimes lead to inappropriate behavior. Lack of effective policies, inadequate training, and poor leadership can also contribute to a culture that tolerates harassment.(M Akram 2022) Harassment in the bank sector can have severe outcomes, including emotional distress, decreased productivity, and increased turnover. Victims of harassment may experience anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Harassment can also lead to decreased job satisfaction, absenteeism, and reduced performance. Furthermore, harassment can damage the bank's reputation, lead to legal liability, and result in financial losses.( Muhammed et Al 2023) One of the most critical outcomes that can result from having poor preventions against harassment in the bank sector is the loss of talented employees. When employees experience or witness harassment and feel that their concerns are not taken seriously, they may choose to leave the bank, resulting in significant recruitment and training costs. Moreover, the loss of experienced employees can lead to a decline in customer service, reduced productivity, and decreased competitiveness. Therefore, banks must prioritize effective harassment prevention and response strategies to create a safe and respectful work environment that fosters employee well-being and retention.(Syed Gulzar 2024)
