Abstract:
BACKGROUND: PPAR-y expression sites include the epithelium and submucosa of the lungs as well as the smooth muscles of airway.
PPAR-y plays a vital role of immunomodulation and hence may be used as a potential anti-inflammatory agent for the diseases of the
airways. Thiazolidinediones including Pioglitazone and Rosiglitazone are agonists of the receptor and therefore may possess
bronchodilating properties. Salbutamol, a beta 2 agonist being used as a bronchodilator has a number of adverse effects based on
whichthe main idea for this study was postulated
OBJECTIVE:
METHODOLOGY:A n experimental stufdor yth e period of one week was conducted at animal house of Northwest School of Medicine,
on a total of 24 guinea pigs randomly divided into four groupsa s Group 1 (Histamine control group), Group 2 (Histamine + Salbutamol),
Group 3 (Histamine + Rosiglitazone) and Group 4 (Histamine + Pioglitazone). A volume transducer of isometric type was used to
measure the drugeffecton contracof ttihe osnmosot h muscles induced by histamine. One way ANOVwAit h a Tukey's pohsoc tte st was
used for comparisons
RESULTS: Both Pioglitazone and rosiglitazone significantly reduced the histamine induced contractions with an efficacy equal to
salbutamol. Between the two, Pioglitazone produced more potent effect as compared to rosiglitazone,
CONCLUSION: Thiazolidinediones significantly reduce histamine induced smooth muscle contractions of, which is comparabtol eth e
effect of salbutamol.
