Abstract:
Unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) have emerged as a transformative technology revolutionizing CBRN (chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear) and EOD (explosive ordnance disposal) operations. Unlike human operators, UGVs can navigate hazardous environments without endangering lives, offering a compelling solution to mitigate the inherent risks. Their ability to function autonomously or under remote control further enhances their suitability for these critical missions. This thesis delves into the design, implementation, and testing of a multi-mission UGV capable of detecting and neutralizing CBRN and EOD threats, highlighting its potential to transform these operations. The primary objective was to create an autonomous UGV capable of navigating complex environments, identifying and analyzing CBRN and EOD threats, and providing real-time data to operators. A comprehensive approach encompassing hardware development, software programming, and extensive testing was employed. The UGV platform was meticulously designed to withstand harsh conditions and accommodate a suite of sensors and actuators. Software algorithms were developed to enable autonomous navigation, threat detection, and data transmission. Rigorous testing procedures evaluated the UGV’s performance in simulated CBRN and EOD scenarios. The results demonstrated the successful development of a multi-mission UGV capable of effectively addressing CBRN and EOD challenges. The UGV exhibited robust navigation capabilities, accurately identified and characterized CBRN and EOD threats, and provided real-time data to operators. These findings underscore the potential for UGVs to revolutionize CBRN and EOD operations, safeguarding human lives and enhancing mission success.
