Measuring the Performance of Crypto Currency: A Comparison Study Between Alternative Crypto Currency Coins and other Alternative Investments

Abstract

This thesis is based on the performance of altcoins in comparison with alternative investments. Globally there are quite few investment opportunities beside the traditional stocks and bonds investment which a portfolio manager chooses for their clients to diversify the portfolio. Cryptocurrency is one of the types of alternative investment but if we dig down we will find thousands of other coins besides the mega Bitcoin, called “Altcoins”. The research in this thesis helps the investor about the returns of Altcoins and Alternative Investments for the past 5 years. The returns are discussed in relevance to see which one is a better option for the investor. Both the altcoins and alternative investments have their own problems which cannot be mitigate but this research is only targeting their performance taking 5 big altcoins according to their market capitalization comparing with Hedge Funds and REITs which are the 2 biggest of alternative investments. The finding shows that altcoins performed comparatively far better than alternative investments during the last 5 years.
