Sedimentologic Characteristics Of Cretaceous Kawagarh Formation, Tauheed Abad Section, Hazara Basin, Kp, Pakistan

Abstract

The current study is aimed at the sedimentologic characteristics of the Kawagarh Formation of the Cretaceous age at Tauheed Abad, Kuza Gali, Abbottabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. Kawagarh Formation is comprised of medium to thick-bedded, compact, hard but fractured limestone at the study section. In order to investigate the details of Kawagarh Formation 22 samples were collected. Different fossil groups and members were identified during the petrographic analyses i.e., radiolaria, foraminifers, echinoderms and bioclast. Foraminiferal wackestone, Bioclastic wackestone, Foraminiferal mudstone and Bioclastic mudstone microfacies were recognized using Dunham (1962) and Folk (1962) classifications. The diagenetic changes observed include neomorphism, pyritization, stylolitization, fractures and micritization. Based on the recorded fossils, Microfacies and diagenetic alterations, the Kawagarh Formation is assigned with Early to Middle Campanian age and outer ramp as the depositional environment.
