dc.description.abstract | The objective of the study conducted was to produce compost and biogas from anaerobic digestion of peels of fruits and vegetables and catering waste. The samples were collected from local markets and restaurants of Rawalpindi and Islamabad. Anaerobic conditions were provided for the reaction to take place. Initial sample was collected and tested. Samples were collected over a time period of 48 days. The first after 20 days, next after 32 days, then after 40 days and the last after 48 days. Parameters like pH, EC, TDS, salts, organic carbon, nitrogen content and moisture content were measured. A digital multimeter was used to measure pH, TDS,EC and salts. The carbon content was calculated by the determination of the ash percentage followed by a formula. The nitrogen content was calculated using the method of Anderson and Ingram and the moisture content was calculated using gravimetric method. The final results showed a decrease in pH, increase in EC, decrease in moisture content and an increase in carbon and nitrogen content of the samples, indicating it to be able to be used as a good compost and its ability to produce biogas in significant amounts. | en_US |
