The study was conducted to determine the quality of water of filtration plants in selected
sectors of Islamabad. Total of 30 samples were analyzed for biological, Physio-chemical
parameter. The water samples were collected by following proper standard protocols. Physical parameters including pH (ranging from 6.61-7.75),temperature (ranging between
14.9-15.2), and Electrical conductivity (367-793) were within the permissible limit whereas few samples of TDS (with minimum value of 261 and maximum value of 564)
and total salts (varying between 171-384) were beyond the permissible limit of WHO. Similarly, the chemical parameters including chloride (28.4-133.4), sodium (18.4-86.4), sodium chloride (122.9-132.2), alkalinity (22-170), calcium (64-148) were within the permissible limit whereas, total hardness (150-710) and magnesiumwere above WHO
permissible limit. For microbial analysis, there was zero bacterial growth in macConkey
Agar but for Nutrient Agar, some samples showed bacterial growth in some mediums that
were beyond the permissible limit of WHO.
These results suggestthat some of the filtration plants need proper monitoring and better maintenance for better drinking water quality. |
