Abstract:
In this study, drinking water quality of authorised and unauthorised areas of Islamabad was analyzed. Study included the comparative analysis of authorised areas (Jinnah Garden, F-8/2, G-10/2, I-8/2 AND I-8/3) and unauthoirsed areas (Bahria enclave, Alipur, Chatta Bakhtawar and Tarlai). The main source of drinking water in these areas is from filtration plants and bore holes and tap waters. The filtration plants are installed by WASA under Punjab government. The main purpose of this study was to determine the quality of
drinking water in selected areas of Islamabad. For this, 30 water samples were collected
from both the authorized and unauthorized socities of Islamabad including tap waters, bore waters and filtration plants. The study aimed to analyze physicochemical, microbiological analysis as well as heavy metal parameters. The overall result of the study shown that the concentration of all the physicochemical parameters were far below the permissible limits while concentration of biological parameters, heavy metals exceeded the permissible limits. However, the concerned authorities shall start focusing on the un-authorized societies water quality condition. As most of the results of un-authorized societies were beyond the defined permissible limits by WHO and there is a need to install filtration plants in areas like Alipur, Chatta Bakhtawar.
