Abstract:
International politics is defined as eternal struggle for power; states want power for the pursuit of their national interests, deter other states and influence others to do what they would otherwise not. North Korea justifies their development of nuclear weapon capabilities as a deterrence act, a security struggle to defend them from enemy-United State. DPRK nuclear weapon program in Korean peninsula and Pyongyang’s missile weapon program has turned to be a headache for US administrations. For decades, North Korea's quest of nuclear weapons has been a major concern of US foreign policy has threatened the global non proliferation regime and the stability of the region. Many countries has been involved in playing their major roles in this problem however the US has occurred to be most important player making all his effort to resolve the issue through diplomatic means, through putting pressure with the of the the leaders making it a global effort in order to put North Korea into isolation. Certain effort that has been made by combination of diplomacy - soft power and through putting pressure - hard power has temporarily been successful in halting the Pyongyang’s progress however the dynamics of Korean peninsula conflict have not been reversed and have essentially failed to bring change. Obama and trump administrations also tried to add their efforts in dealing with North Korean issue through their respective policy choices, perceptions and strategies but the result turned to be not so victorious. Obama’s policy of Strategic patient involved gradual application of coercion through non provocative ways by implementing sanctions to make sure DPRK comes to negotiation table. Obama applied strategic patience policy on DPRK with the approach of diplomacy. However the policy was later applied in confrontational manner when North Korea attacked on South Korea in 2010. Obama increased the economic sanctions however Obama administration reverted back to diplomacy after humanitarian visit by Carter president to Pyongyang. This visit leaded towards talks between US and DPRK leading to a leap day deal in MS IR-IV : FINAL THESIS 14 2012. When president Trump came to office North Korea conducted ballistic missile and nuclear weapon testing and threatened US and East Asia’s regional stability continuously. Trump changed the strategic patience policy of Obama into policy of maximum pressure to deal nuclear and missile program of DPRK. This maximum pressure policy consist of economic, diplomatic and military pressure against DPRK. The war with words took place after president Trump made multiple hostile tweets that were directing towards Kim Jong Un that furthered the hostile relation between both States.
