Abstract:
Projects implemented in the IT sector are considered as one of the most significant factors
for providing assistance to fulfil ever-growing needs of technology in developing countries.
Due to unsatisfactory performance of these projects, they are considered to have low success
rates. Researchers are now considering Project management (PM) tools and methodologies
as possible solution for the failure of IT projects. Different industries have different levels of
adoption of Project Management tools and practices. There is a gap between Project
Management theory and its practical implementation particularly in the IT sector. Study of
best Project Management practices or tools within the planning and execution phases for
projects in IT sector holds immense importance for better outcomes and overall project
success. The aim of this research is to find the effect of PM tools on Project performance and
to find out the most effective Project Management Techniques used in IT sector. A survey
was conducted among project managers working in IT sector to study the extent of adoption
of PM practices and tools. This study proves that there are different levels of adoption of PM
tools among Project Managers. Different organizations use different set of tools during the
Project lifecycle for successful project execution. These tools are linked to project
performance in terms of both the internal and external project success.
