dc.description.abstract The estimation of rock mass strength is a key parameter in geotechnical engineering which is used in the design of geotechnical structures like tunnels, dams and slopes. Mechanical characterization was carried out on limestone from Samana Suk Formation to explore their potential for utilization as construction and aggregate material. Laboratory test were performed in accordance with ASTM and ISRM standards to determine UCS, UTS, SHR, SG, WA, LAA and SS. The UCS was determined by using universal testing machine to crush core samples, UTS test was also performed on core sample in horizontal direction, in accordance to ISRM and ASTM suggested methods. Average values calculated for SG is 2.71%, WA 0.51%, LAA 14.12% and SS values 0.6%. The UCS ranges from 35.84 MPa to 45.37 MPa with a mean value of 40.56 Mpa and UTS values ranges from 6.80 MPa to 12.58 MPa with a mean value of 9.07 Mpa and SHR average values ranges from 37.67 to 44.00 of the studied samples. The evaluated mechanical and physical properties were compared with standard specifications for their qualification as construction materials. Petrographic study of the rocks reveals the presence of calcite, bioclast and pyrite in the samples. The study indicates that the average calcite content is 86.42 % and average bioclast content is 12.58%. Limestone of Samana Suk formation fall within standards specifications limits and can be used for construction purposes and utilized as aggregate sources indigenous construction industry. en_US
