dc.description.abstract This report is the apogee of several months of hard work including extensive research and development. A lot of rigorous use of our brains and other external resources, in the past four months has taken us soaring from mere commoners to rank Software Engineers. The Ivy Messenger involves a vast experience of programming in Java. It has been divided into two logically different sub-applications, which might be conveniently referred to as the front end (client/interface) and the back end (server). These subapplications combine cohesively to provide services of network administration over the network both LAN and WAN. This project has "modular" rating which implies the facility of re-use of all the basic components that the project is constituted of. Also, there is plenty of room for future enhancements since the project has been engineered with the modem day o~ject-oriented approach. This application is very much capable of providing the facility of online · chat between several users and letting them share ft..les through the fl.le transfer protocol. The user is capable of creating as many accounts as desired and then run on a single machine (multi client feature). Also the user can change the type, size and color of the text. Apart from being able to save the chat, the user can also print and fax it. It is for the user to choose who to add to his/her contact list and who to reject by using add and delete contact facilities. The application is also capable of displaying the online and offline contacts. Web communicational methods have become a very widely known and used method to communicate over and around the globe. There are several applications created to support web communication and several systems have been developed world-wide that involve the use of such applications. Multi-client applications are definitely a preference as far as web communication is concerned. One such application is called ''the Messenger". 111 en_US
