dc.description.abstract In today’s environment need for a smart home has increased. People are busier in their work and jobs and they have a little time for household work. In such a case an efficient smart home is necessary. Our project is a small part of a smart home, which deals with elderly people and patients 1.1 Sensors One of the most important features of human beings is that they can sense. This ability is used in almost every thing and we perform various tasks using our senses. Same role is being played by different sensors in the enhancement of science and technology. A sensor gives us an analogue output which can then be converted into digital form for further processing. Sensors are basically mechanical or electrical components that are used to determine the pattern of a system or an object. Mechanical sensors include pressure sensors. Electrical sensors include ammeters, voltmeters etc. There are some other sensors as well such as photo detectors, infrared sensors etc. Sensors can be wired as well as wireless. Wireless sensors are much more advantageous than wired sensors. Wireless sensors are much uncomplicated to use as no wiring is needed to install them. Wireless sensors have many other benefits such as they are portable, flexible and they need less power as compared to wired sensors. The range of wireless sensors is also greater than wired sensors and these can be used in locations that are far apart to monitor. Up gradation of existing systems is also an easy task if we use wireless sensors. 1.2 Increase in elderly population The number of old people in the modern world is more than it was 10 to 20 years ago. The reason for this increase in the average human age is due to the use of modern scientific techniques and method to take care of oneself. So there is a increased need for making a system en_US
