Abstract

This chapter is about the principle of the project and a brief know-how about the project is mentioned. The reason behind choosing to work on the project and the problem is explained in detail.

1.1 Purpose

The project is a research assistant to help with easy organization of information such as saved webpages, book marks and text documents. It would let one view and change contents of the folders where all the information is saved while browsing. User woud be able to create text documents within the application - paste text to it and format it. There will be referencing style converters for fast conversion of citations and research templates to apply basic formatting to a research paper .It will also have a find feature to search through all or part of the documents.

1.1 Statement Of Problem

The problem is that many researchers find the research process cumbersome and unorganized. Management of information is difficult when gathering data from multiple sources at different times and referencing this information while writing a research paper or a report. It becomes hard to keep track of what was saved where and searching takes up a lot of time. Following different referencing styles is also time consuming as it requires keeping track of the format to be used each time a reference is cited. Applying a research template also requires certain settings of alignment, line and paragraph spacing etc. Each requirement of the setting must be strictly followed. Consequently , a single tool is needed that can help researchers with collecting information, organizing it and making a research paper or report while using it. 1.3 Background

The existing solutions for this particular problem were analyzed to see how they have dealt with it. iMiser and research project helper are studied thoroughly . They were compared to check what good features have they provided and what flaws are present. The features to be adapted and avoided were noted. The research template APA was learnt through the book “Publication Manual of APA Sixth Edition”. The citation rules to be incorporated and checks to be made for the validation of references in the project were specified. The research paper “Knowledge Management Architecture: Building Blocks and Their Relationships” By Varintorn Supyuenyong [1] was studied to know about the four major elements of the knowledge management architecture: • Knowledge components • Knowledge management process • Information technology (IT) • Organization/corporate culture.
