Abstract:
Cellular Technology has made significant progress in Pakistan over the years. GSM/GPRS has emerged as a quality standard for all operators. GPRS features such as Internet and MMS have been a success and with the fast progress in Technology awareness the demand has sharply risen. Quality and Innovation of services is the need of the hour for mobile operators. Ufone was the first mobile operator to make use of the GPRS technology and since then other operator have followed. The existing GPRS networks are facing problems such as Congestion, Low Data rates etc. Ufone again needs to be innovative and once again lead the technology market. A technology migration to the Third Generation Standard has the answer to these questions. UMTS/WCDMA has been acknowledged and adapted by many European countries as the next generation GSM. Also known as 3GSM, UMTS has been developed on quality standards and provides a vast range of services. This project was taken to recommend Ufone to migrate to 3rd Generation of GSM with a proper procedure. The primary purpose is to help in the technology migration so that the current GSM/GPRS network is not altered extensively and UMTS can be offered at parallel. The document is to explain the relevant implementation details for the UMTS network over existing Ufone GPRS as well as recommend different solutions and equipment for this purpose.
