dc.description.abstract The objective of this project, secure telephony over packet based networks, is to perform telephonic conversation in offices and organizations on an already installed Local Area Network (LAN), so that there is no need of a separate network just for the purpose of secure voice communication. This solution is cost effective and cheap and provides security and readiness of availability. The project involves design and implementation of a Secure and Compressed Voice communication over packet switched networks using Real-time Transport Protocol (RTP) and User Datagram Protocol (UDP) based on the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) standard. The aim of this project was to establish a voice communication channel between LAN terminals, give security to the users so that their communication channel cannot be intruded and also compress the voice signal over the network for better performance of the communication system even at the peak hours when the traffic over the network is heavy. This project has also the feature of broad casting which can help the control room to pass orders directly at the same time to all the terminals of the LAN. Text chat is also an additional feature of this software which would allow users to communicate even when they are not in possession of audio sensitive devices like mic and speakers. The speech being transmitted and received can be monitored on a audio monitor which can show various modes of display. The channel uses Real Time Transport Protocol (RTP) and User Datagram Protocol to transmit and receive audio data over packet networks. The user interacts with the application through a Graphic User Interface (GUI). The working environment for this project was Visual C++. en_US
