dc.description.abstract The convergence of traditional telephony, data networks and the Internet, fixed and mobile networks, the emergence of integrated broadband multimedia networks and the information superhighway contribute heavily to the rapid changes in the telecommunications industry. In this context provision and customization of services become fundamental issues. Intelligence in Networks is a key element, allowing for the fast and flexible introduction of new services and customization capabilities, encouraging competition for the greater benefits of customers. The Intelligent Network, in conjunction with Internet solutions, will help customers navigate between emerging multimedia applications and will allow service and content providers to access the market. Network providers and service providers will add value and intelligence to the information infrastructure through open interfaces between domains such as network operators, service providers and content providers. An intelligent network (IN) is a service-independent telecommunications network. That is, intelligence is taken out of the switch and placed in computer nodes that are distributed throughout the network. This provides the network operator with the means to develop and control services more efficiently. New capabilities can be rapidly introduced into the network. Once introduced, services are easily customized to meet individual customer's needs en_US
