A GIS-Based Water Supply System of Islamabad

Abstract

GISlamabad is a Geographical Information System of the Water Supply System of Islamabad developed for Capital Development Authority (CDA), Islamabad. It is a customized GIS and digital cartography application to provide IT system support for the information management and automation of the Directorate of Water Supply of CDA to improve the cun-ent system. It incorporates thematic mapping using GIS techniques with accurate raster maps that have been rectified, gee-referenced and digitized to provide authentic vector data of the study area thus allowing accurate inference by its users. For such goals and the processes involved therein, sophisticated software including AutoCAD Map, ERDAS IMAGINE and Environment Systems Research Institute's (ESRI) ArcView GIS and MapObjects have been used. Consequently, requirement analysis for this project has been a vast learning experience and the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) phases have been followed throughout, leading to the design and development of the application where data organization and a user-friendly Graphk User Interface have been the major milestones. GISlamabad provides vanous utilities for the user, to interact with the maps of Islamabad's Water Supply System. These utilities provide several functions for map viewing, locating, saving and printing along with viewing and updating operations for the database. Therefore, a unique product with immense commercial value and diverse business applications, GISlamabad is an ideal manifestation of Information Technology as a GIS for environmental and town plarming and management systems.
