Abstract:
HIV is a serious health issue as identified by WHO. It has been estimated that 37.7 million people are suffering from it (WHO, 2020). The aim of the present study was to explore the details about doctor’s and their patient’s perspective regarding psychological issues of individuals living with HIV/AIDS. 5 doctors and their 20 patients were recruited for the study from different hospitals and centers in Islamabad. It was Qualitative research design and structured interview guide was used to collect the data. Doctors along with their patients effected with HIV/AIDS were interviewed to figure out the psychological issues faced by HIV+ patients. After taking the consent of the participants interviews were conducted in Urdu. Content analysis was used to analyze the collected data both qualitatively and quantitatively using summative content approach. From the doctor’s perspective anxiety, depression and acceptances issues are the major psychological issues among HIV/AIDS patients. From the perspective of patients different psychological issues among HIV+ patients are sadness, nervousness, hopelessness, suicidal attempts and ideations, uncertainty about life, crying spells, aggression and forgetfulness, worried about children’s , guilt feelings, psychosomatic symptoms, loss of interest in daily life activities, fear of stigma and discrimination. The findings of the study will help the Doctors and the Department of Health in our country to not only treat these patients physically but also provide proper mental health services and facilities to those patients and their families.
