dc.description.abstract Use of the global system for mobile communications (GSM ) continues to .\pread throughout the world. The 'new services, impr:ovements, applications, and products are the lleJv flavors offered i11 the GSNI ice cream stand of H'ireless telecommrmicatio11s network. New termi11als featitre increased · standby and talk times while their sizes shri11k a11d th eir prices fall. ,· GS1l1 is not what it is used to be only three years ago, and it 1vill change into something else 11 ext year. In this thesis report 1ve have paused to see H'hat GS1ll means today a11d what it 111ill be in near future. GSJ1,1 has brought loH·-cost and reliable mobile commu11ications to most of the co;mtries of the H'Orld. GS.H has spent its childhood in the boundaries of JtVestern Europe but its adolescence is H'elcomed by most oft!te countries ofthe 1vorld. JJ e ha1·e tried ltumb(l' to cover as many segments as possible of GSM. 1J ·e hm·e given an Ol'eiTieHi of history of cellular mobile commzmicatio11 and GS.ll since it is the prerequisite of the better understa11ding of GS /1,11, 1vhiclt is mere(r a set of srandards and recommendations. JVe· 11eed to knOJI' the phases through which GSJI,J has evoh•ed. JVe co1•ered the basic concepts of cellular mobile commrmication. These concepts are llecesSWJ' for the compreheu.<.,·ion of GS1lf and to the GS'Al network and inte1jaces. It not only covers the components of the GS1\I-PLJlJN but also explains the architecture of these components. Figures are added exteiiSh'ely to· aid the reader to get better understanding of these components. JVe lral•e also studied meaniNg of commo11ly used identitie!f iu GSM. It also focuses the deu~ils of subscriber ideutity module, which is not less 'than a magic card ~nd enc()mpasses the topics related to channels in GSM-PLMN network. It depicts the formation of TDftJA frames and multiframes. en_US
