dc.description.abstract The project comprises the research of Fiber Optics and designing a fiber based network. Micronet Broadband (pvt) limited is an Islamabad/Rawalpinidi based DSL service Provider Company. They are planning to enhance their services also to other cities of Pakistan. For which they have chosen the communication medium Fiber Optics and have assigned this duty to me to make a brief research on Fiber Optics and its Communications standards. This project has also included the connectivity of Bahria University Islamabad and Bahria University Karachi. The project is divided into four phases or parts. The first part discusses the fundamental problems of communication, attractiveness of fiber to the premises environment, and fiber optics technology. The two world wide communication standards are used for the fiber SONET and SDH, the next phase briefly describes about the SONET, its frame format, Network elements, Network configurations and about its overheads. The third part describes about the Optical Networks, types of Optical Networks, Component Applications and its design and planning. The next and last part is the main designing part of connectivity of Bahria Islamabad and Bahria Karachi. In this part I have done Hardware Specification, Selection of Equipment, Interfacing of Hardware and Power Budgeting. The project describes all the issues regarding the selection of fiber, which fiber will be used for which environment and all of its properties, characteristics, construction and its communication standard SONET. In the designing part it gives a brief idea of which Hardware will be required and which equipment will be selected. And all the equipment is selected in a way that it can adopt the changes if required in the future. It is totally a well designed and scalable network design. en_US
