dc.description.abstract Telephony, one of the most important and efficient ways to communicate and share infom1ation in the 20th century, is dramatically changing in the 21st century. With the advent of Internet protocol (IP) telephony, integrated voice and data communications are becoming a reality. The challenge is maintaining and improving the quality of what is heard while realizing all the benefits of digital convergence. There are too many technologies and standards currently available for new generation telephony and its applications, however for this project it is tried to cover a range of topics dealing with convergence of voice and data communication using soft telephony (IP telephony) in general. The study and implementation of various techniques of Soft telephony using the Linux platform is the backbone of the project. en_US
