The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between uses of music , flow and flourishing in university students. It was hypothesized that there is likely to be a positive • relationship between music engagement (effective use of music, background use of music, • cognitive use of music), flow and flourishing positive emotions, engagement, relationshi s • meaning and accom lishment . I was also hypothesized that flow state will mediate the relationship between music engagement and flourishing in university students . Correlational • research design was used to conduct this study. SA sample of 300 university students (men =142 and woman= 158) with (mean=21.41 & SD=l.85) the age range of 18-28 years was recruited by • using purposive sampling technique from different institutes of Islamabad and Rawatnindi. Th • Urdu version Uses of Music Inventory {_Chamorro-Premuzic& Fulham, 2007 , Flow Short Scale (FSS; Rheinberg, Vollmeyer, &Engager, 2003) and PERMA-Profile (Butler and Kern, 2015) were employed to measure the construct. Pearson product moment correlation analysis resulted as Effective engagement having positive significant correlation with background engagement, absorption by activity, and cognitive engagement. Background engagement was positively significantly correlated with cognitive background and absorption by activity, and it showed non- • significant relation with fluency of performance and flourish. Findings of Structural equation model (SEM) through AMOS (Analysis of Moment Structure) and the results showed that affective and cognitive uses of music were found to be significant positive predictors of flow and flourishing in university students. Whereas background use was found to be a non-significant predictor of flow and flourishing. Meanwhile flow was also proved to be a significant positive forecaster of flourishing. This study is significant as the current study results showed that the flow is a positive forecaster of flourishing. Additionally, it was found out that flow is an important mediator between uses of music and flourishing. The result implies people can achieve flow state through uses of music which will help in their wellbeing (flourishing). |
