dc.description.abstract Water is an essential element for the survival of living beings. Along with the natural aspect, water is also vital for the economies of the countries. Being a vital element the importance of water in the contemporary times has rapidly increased, this increase is due to the fact that the water is becoming a scarce resource. Water scarcity is one of the many issues that mankind faces in the 21st Century, but the impact of this particular issue has drastic implications. Water scarcity in the areas where there are shared waters is a trigger for conflict which can ultimately lead to war. Water has the potential to become a source of conflict, on the other hand, it can be taken as a conflict prevention tool. In fact, water played a vital role in diffusing the tensions between two arch-rivals, Pakistan and India. The signing of the Indus Waters Treaty between the two countries is an example of water diplomacy. A concept in which countries tend to look out for the potentials for cooperation in order to ensure water security for the long run. The important factors that come into play while talking of cooperation between the co-riparians are the willingness of the riparians. Cooperation can only be ensured when the co-riparians are ready to explore the space to cooperate. Due to the emerging scenarios, the factors that made the water treaties in between the countries a success, will no longer be relevant in the future. Keeping this in sight the countries should focus on the means to promote peace and harmony rather than entering into a mutually hurting stalemate. Water had served as a catalyst for peace process in between the countries, and it has the potential to do it over again. Water diplomacy can be effective only if the political and geographical realities are taken into consideration. en_US
