Abstract:
Purpose: The education sector of Karachi has become dynamic and a large number of people
have now started to pursue their career in the field ofteaching. In this regard, there is a great
need to draw attention towards the human resource aspect ofthe educational institutions as it is
extremely imperative to sustain high performance of the teachers. HRM practices can have a
profound impact on the level of performance and it is necessary to ensure that teachers are
intrinsically motivated to perform theirjobs. Specifically, this research has been conducted to
examine the mediating effect ofintrinsic motivation on the relation between HRM practices and
employee performance in the business administration universities ofKarachi.
Methodology & Design: The study being primary and quantitative in nature relied on the
responses of teachers belonging to seven different universities of Karachi. A structured
questionnaire had been adopted from two previous studies by Tessema & Soeters (2006) and
Karatepe (2006) which comprised of 8 items and a total of 37 questions. A sample size of 384
was taken while non-probability convenient sampling was used as the sampling technique.
