Abstract:
In recent years, Hunza has been seen changes in its socio-cultural practices. the most dominant perception among the people of Hunza is that these changes are due to modernization. This research is about the Impact of Modernization on Socio-cultural Practices among Hunzukutz in the central Hunza, district of Gilgit-Baltistan. the study explains the relationship between the socio-cultural changes and modernization how modernization is rapidly making its place in the traditional society of Hunza. Qualitative research methods such as key informants, rapport building, participant observation, in-depth and semi-structured interviews, case studies, focus group discussions, daily dairy, audiovisual recording, and photography were used. The sample size is 15 respondents. Hunzukutz(those belonging to Hunza) the socio-cultural practices that give them an identity. They divide them into two categories social practices and cultural practices. The social practices such as Dimanas gunx (Birth), Gar (Marriage ceremony), Gaton (Traditional dressing), Kuyouch gati (Social gatherings), Gari Ce Hurutas (Family time), Bitan/bitaiyo (shamans) Cultural practices such as Thomoshaling, Bophaow, Ginani, are practiced in Hunza.it is also believed that this is the modernization that is making its place in this traditional society, to cope with the modernization and to save their socio-cultural practices the locals have introduced a coping mechanism in form of local organizations. Moreover, these shows religious organizations are also working as coping mechanisms.
